What Is a SCBA Respirator?
A scba respirator is a vital tool for firefighters and other emergency responders in dangerous workplace situations. This equipment provides a supply of breathable air from an independently powered gas cylinder, making it ideal for use in hazardous conditions. It’s also known as an industrial breathing set, an air pack, an oxygen cylinder or simply a mask.
SCBAs are designed to filter, supplement and recirculate exhaled gas, providing a continuous supply of breathable air in an emergency situation. They may be open- or closed-circuit, with different options available for specific situations. Some types are rebreathers, using potassium superoxide to generate oxygen from water and carbon dioxide, with a chlorate candle generating the hydrogen required. Other types are pure oxygen systems, using a tank of liquid oxygen under pressure to provide breathable air.
How to Choose the Right SCBA Respirator for Your Needs
Depending on the type of scba respirator being used, there are different requirements for its use and maintenance. For example, some models are suitable for firefighting, and meet the guidelines established by NFPA Standard 1981. These SCBAs typically have a full-face mask and a positive-pressure, open-circuit oxygen system.
In addition, other scba respirators are designed for chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) environments. These are closed-circuit SCBAs, which offer long-duration respiratory protection in complex or enclosed spaces where a firefighter might find themselves. Those that have been NIOSH-approved under the CBRN program are usually fitted with a mask and air cylinder, as well as other safety equipment. Other types of scba respirator are emergency escape-only systems, which are primarily intended for escape from contaminated or toxic atmospheres where a user is not likely to be exposed for a prolonged period.…
